Oscar Olivera became well-known all over the world, as the leader of the Cochabamba “water war” in 2000. After five month of mobilization and political struggle the residents of Cochabamba forced the US transnational company Bechtel to quit Bolivia. Earlier the Bechtel company had been awarded a contract to provide the citizens of Cochabamba with privately operated water supply, a contract pushed on the Bolivian government by the World Bank.
In this struggle Oscar Olivera became the spoke person for the “Coalition in defence of water and life”, which has taken the position the water should not be a commodity but a human right. He is today an influential person in Bolivia and all over Latin America.
Oscar Olivera will present the importance of the struggle in Cochabamba, the social movements created by it and the management of public water utilities in Bolivia.
